This paper examines the character of Eugene Henderson in Saul Bellow's novel, "Henderson the Rain King". Henderson is the
modern hero who is unhappy yet seeks his joy through a
quest for reality. This quest takes him all the way to primitive Africa, where he is forced to understand his life and his existence.
