Original Author: Stephan Kosch
This abstract was translated from Zoff um Zucker
The sweet substance and the Globalization. We perceive it just marginally at the supermarket , but sugar is three -fold more
expensive than anywhere else in the world. The reason: The costumers subsidy the control of the European market yearly with several millions of Euros since decades . The complicated system of crop growing quotas, duties and guaranteed prices ensure the income of the local sugar economies and the farmers. For them is unacceptable to offer to the market the expensive beet sugar at dumping-prices. However, a new market regulation was implemented since summer 2006. The sugar prices will diminish. The consequences are dramatic and, thought compensation payments, the countrymen will receive many thousands of Euro to a lesser extent yearly. This menace. the existence of many family enterprises having a centenary tradition. In the developing countries, profiting from their condition of former European colonies, the worries increase. The free trade benefits mainly the sugar giant, Brazil, and the big food stuff producers. The book describes how a Brussels´ decision has consequences all over the world. I also shows how the people affected face the challenges of the globalization.
