Sue and Johnsy, two young artists, meet, become friends, and rent an apartment together to share expenses. In November, Johnsy becomes ill with pneumonia. Outside her window only a few leaves cling to an old ivy vine. Johnsy convinces herself that she will not get well; she believes that when the last
leaf falls off the vine, she will die. Worried, Sue goes downstairs and reveals her fears to Mr. Behrman, a grizzled, unsuccessful artist. Only one leaf remains on the
vine now, and they fear it will fall during the night. The next morning the last leaf is still there, causing Johnsy to think about her situation. She comes to believe that fate caused the leaf to stay on the vine so that she would not die. With this change in attitude, Johnsy gradually gets well. Mr. Behrman becomes ill and quickly dies. Sue discovers that in the raging storm, Mr. Behrman climbed a ladder and painted a true masterpiece--a picture of the last leaf on the brick wall. ----- READ-ALONG
