The ''AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A YOGI'' by Paramhansa Yogananda is not an ordinary book; it is a
book which one
must read in ones'' lifetime. It is a virtual
spiritual treasure trove which will change the readers'' very way of thinking.
The book though of a deeply spiritual nature is at the same time written in a very lucid and thrilling style which makes it interesting to the casual reader as well as serious seekers looking for answers to their spiritual questions. The book not only talks about Kriya Yoga but encapsulates the evolution of a spiritual Master from birth to the final destination.
Paramhansa Yogananda traces his
life from childhood through to adolescence to adulthood all along thrilling the reader with his spiritual experiences and prowess. He begins with his early life in Gorakhpur, his birthplace in North East India, and how even at a tender age he had clear recollections of an earlier life, of a
YOGI amongst the Himalayan Snows. Paramhansa Yogananda describes his early life, his family and parents who set the stage for the evolution of one of the greatest spiritual leaders of the century.
It was his parents through whom he came into contact with Lahiri Mahasaya. Lahiri Mahasaya left his physical body shortly after Paramhansa Yogananda was born, however his spiritual being continued to guide the young Yogananda through his spiritual journey.
Yogananda recounts his juvenile escapades and how as a youngster he tried to run away to the Himalayas, only to be caught and hauled back home. He then describes his encounter with his Guru Shri Yukteshwar who asks him to return home and pursue his studies. The book is rich with Yoganada''s spiritual experiences and this abstract cannot even attempt to do even an iota of justice to this book extraordinaire. However, just to whet the spiritual appetite of potential
readers a few are enumerated here.
Paramhansa Yogananda writes about the Tiger Swami who used to tame wild Bengal Tigers, the Levitating saint who could stay several feet above the ground, and finally about the amazing Yogi, Babaji, who is said to be over 2000 years old and living in the Himalayas even today. The description of Babaji and his meeting with Lahiri Mahasaya will make the readers'' hair stand on end; such are the spiritual vibrations which one can feel by merely reading this book.
"The Autobiography of a Yogi'' by Paramhansa Yogananda'' is not a book but a gateway to a
different life, a different world, and a different plane.
