Land of Notion: Book 1 is a compilation of whimsical short stories and quirky poems. The storylines of each of these pieces varies quite dramatically. A few of the stories are written like regular fantasy stories complete with well developed storylines, some character development, and intriguing premises. This is particularly true of The Adventures of Ebony and Cream and Joshua’s Dream. If the author would have expanded either of these stories into an entire book or built a series of short stories around these mystical locations, I would have been extremely happy with the results as I quite enjoyed both of these stories and thought they fit rather well into the same general theme. The rest of the book is primarily stories and poetry about weather and nature written as if these elements were sentient beings. Though a very interesting and somewhat entertaining viewpoint, these pieces seemed out of place with the two stories previously mentioned. Perhaps this work would have been better presented as two or more separate books: one containing the weather and nature pieces and the other containing the fantasy works.
