This paper discusses the
gods as literary figures and their effect on the
theology of the poem and the ramifications. The myths and background material contained in the gods'
characters are discussed and the dark, hopeless and tragic theology of the "Iliad" is considered, with examples given. Finally, the political situation of the gods on Olympus is examined and care is taken to emphasise the "human" characters of the divine beings.
