Rick
and Stretch are Homicide Detectives and partners on the L.A. police force. They have worked together
for years and understand each other’s way of thinking and solving crimes. One
morning in Marina del Rey Rick receives a
call from Stretch telling him that he is coming over to discuss something so urgent
that it can’t wait until tomorrow. While Stretch is driving over to Rick’s
house a mysterious old grey car with two passengers in it begins to tail him. When
Stretch does not show up Rick
decides to go and see if Stretch had car
problems, only to discover that Stretch’s Bronco has gone over a cliff and
Stretch has been killed in the crash! After Rick tells Stretch’s wife Terri about
the
death he decides to drive back home.
In the last few hours he has been so sadden by his partner’s death that
it takes him a while to think about what a good driver Stretch was and how many
times he had traveled that winding road.
He also started to think about their last conversation and the reason
why Stretch was coming over that morning in the first place. He decides to go
on in to
work the next morning.
While
collecting all of his dead partner’s personal things from his cabinet and desk
drawer Rick discovers a hidden note that has a series of numbers on it and the
word “BLACKFLASH”. He doesn’t
know what it means, but he is going to find out. can’t convince his boss to open an investigation, so he decides to work on solving
Stretch’s mysterious death alone and on his own time.
“Cracks in the Rainbow” is an excellent
book and Mark
Bouton is a brilliant writer. I found the story to be captivating and
enthralling. He opened up the story in a way that gives the
reader real insight
into each character’s personality. Mark also easily explains the attitude and
behavior of the dead Homicide detective. The reader gets to know this character
even though he dies in the first few pages of the book. I
highly recommend this mystery book and look forward to reading more of Mark
Bouton’s work! Rated 4.5
