Introduction
Dilbert has become the epitome of
office humour around the globe. Scott
Adams' legendary character seems to find a way to the heart of all
employees world over. So when I saw a copy of
Joy of
Work at my library, I decided to grab it.
The
book Like all other Dilbert books and cartoons Joy of Work is
also related to office humour. The book is concentrated on the
idiosyncracies that make the life of your co-workers miserable and thus
giving more and more joy for you at their expense.
Of course, indomitable pointy haired
boss is still around, to make
sure that he is the one who has the maximum joy of work. Scott Adams
writing style is full of humour as usual. The book does not contain too
many cartoon strips compared to the other books, but then it is more or
less made up by the list of jokes provided in the book.
Some of highlights of the book are:
Boss: I studied your technical recommendation and decided it is impossible.
Dilbert: I already did it.
Boss: It will never work.
Dilbert: It's working perfectly.
Boss: You spelled this word wrong.
Dilbert: That's a number!!
Scientists have determined that smoking is okay if you swallow the smoke instead of letting it into your lungs.
Every six months, when the earth rotates on its axis, North Korea becomes South Korea and vice versa.
We cannot offer you a position at this time, but you are obviously
qualified. Unfortunately, the other six billion people on earth are
more qualified.
These are just the tip of the iceberg as to what you can find from this most informative book of them all.
Amongst the various chapters, the book has sections for Managing the boss, Office Pranks, Bringing humour and creativity to the job and Handling Criticism.
Each of these topics have been dealt with sarcastically with the help
of the beloved characters of Dilbert, Wally, Alice, Pointy Haired Boss,
Dogbert and Catbert.
Summary
The book is another winner from the stable of Scott Adams. The more
you read this guy's book, the more you seem to enjoy. USA Today claims
about this book that "Adams has created a minor classic. Gentle reader,
bring tissue because you will laugh until you cry.
I must say that I agree with USA Today and give this book a full 5 star rating!!
