This paper investigates the
book "In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex" by author Nathanial Philbrick and demonstrates that the
management and the organizational activities that occurred on a ill- fated whaling ship are remarkably similar to the strategies that are found in "modern" business management. A focus is on leadership and motivation, as well as diversity among workers and problem- solving and discipline. The book "Supervision Today" (3rd Edition) by Stephen P. Robbins is used to supplement this discussion.
