Corrosion Protection of Metal Structures for Hydropower Station

Article Abstract by: TsingHua

Original Author: Materials Protection
It is essential to conduct periodic overhaul and corrosion protection for the metal structures used at hydropower station,
since they suffer the combined corrosion by atmosphere, water, and silt. Based on the practices with respect to Three Gorges Gezhouba hydro project, the corrosion protection methods for the metal structures of hydropower station were introduced. The selection of the anticorrosion materials such as metal coating, organic paint, and inorganic paint was also discussed. It was found that the epoxy emery coating, thermally sprayed tungsten carbide, and nanometer titanium polymer coating were suitable to the corrosion protection of the metal structures in high velocity flow. Thermally sprayed zinc in combination with organic paint closure was suitable to protect the metal structures under water. And epoxy undercoat combined with acrylic polyurethane paint topcoat was able to effectively prevent the metal structures in atmosphere environment from corrosion. Thus it could be imperative to select proper coatings by taking into account the specific working conditions of the metal structures.
