This paper is an examination of the
writing of D.H. Lawrence. It begins by explaining how Lawrence was received in his day,
then discusses the topics Lawrence commonly wrote about such as a shortage of money, a sense of social class, and the confused
sexuality of the up-to-date family. The short story "The Rocking-Horse Winner" is discussed as a story that brings together all of these themes. The main character, Paul, is paralleled to Lawrence as a boy. Special attention is paid to the manner in which Lawrence writes about sexuality.
