The author makes a comparative
study between the characters Susannah Rowley ("Ship Fever", Andrea Barrett) and Ada Monroe
("Cold Mountain", Charles Frazier). The main point of the
study is that although they cope with their worlds in very different ways, both women choose to take their chances by entering into direct vital interchange with life.
