This paper makes the argument that although most people think of Laura as the main character in "The Glass Menagerie", Tom
has prevailing importance because he is the narrator and because the play ends with his
liberation. The other characters are seen as pawns used to
illustrate his suffering and eventual liberation. Specific examples are given in quotation format from the play, to illustrate each point.
