This paper examines how Pat Barker analyzes the characters of Sassoon and Owen in her
historical fiction novel "Regeneration."
It reviews the work of
historical fiction, centered in Craiglockhart War Hospital, in which she describes the formation of the friendship between Sassoon and Owen, and provides a glimpse into the lives of the emotionally disillusioned and mentally disturbed soldiers. It also looks at how, by focusing on the relationship between Sassoon and Owen, Barker creates a personality and psychological analysis of two great English World War I poets who created a type of beauty and music by exposing the ugliness and sordidness of war.
