Robert Z. Leonard's 1940 film "Pride and Prejudice" was an adaptation, by Aldous Huxley and Jane Murfin, of a stage version
of Jane Austen's
novel. By comparing one scene in the novel and film--Elizabeth Bennet's interview with Lady Catherine de Bourgh at Longbourn-- this paper demonstrates some of the principal
differences between the two works. The paper shows that one of the main differences is that the film treats the story largely as a source of comedy.
