This paper analyzes the theme of
freedom found in
novels by Amy Tan and, particularly, in her novel "The Joy Luck Club".
The paper shows that, while all of Tan's
novels emphasize this theme, "The Joy Luck Club", in particular, underscores how important individual
freedom is even when it seems to come in conflict with one's duty to family.
