One of the most significant features of the 20th century is the rise of the women's movement Even in Naxal movement in the late 60s in Bengal,Bihar and Kerala,women were active.Thosands of women got arrested in 1972 when the movement was focussing on students and tribals.Several women were tortured and killed by police.

In order to raise the status of women in India, existing laws were amended and various new legislations were enacted. The Government accepted the principle of divorce by mutual consent and the Hindu Marriage Law was amended to that effect. Cruelty and desertion were added as grounds for divorce. Taking and giving of dowry were declared punishable.
The Equal Remuneration Act 1979 provides for equal remuneration to men and women workers and prevention of discrimination against women in the matter of employment
