children of Kerala. Rather than holding charity drives, he and his friend Frederick Thomas set about building a handful of eco-friendly stone and bamboo cottages, which they opened to foreigners. Set amid 20 acres of coconut groves on a beautiful private beach, they started to become popular and to make money, which was ploughed back into the orphanage. Today Bethsaida Hermitage cares for 2,600 children of all religions, and at the time of our visit a second phase of building was being planned. Despite the religious setting, there’s no pressure to partake in anything more than sunning yourself! Although this is perhaps the least glamorous of our Kerala resorts, it has charm, privacy and plenty of local attractions.
