This paper looks at five
musicals, starting with "South Pacific". It uses lyrics from these shows to demonstrate how these
musicals have served to raise society's awareness about important issues. The idea is presented that since "South Pacific", musical
theatre has expanded its base to reflect the lives of a wider variety of kinds of peoples, resulting in a body of work that more completely reflects both the people of America and the issues they face.
