This paper analyzes the characters in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "On the Rainy River" in order to illustrate the
concept that what motivates
authors to convince readers towards an alternate view is the belief that society cannot exist on its own. The paper points out how the authors of both use the movies and the characters in the movies to express the theme that society is made of individuals and that, if an
individual feels severed from the group, it is the society's duty to rectify the problem and recruit the individual back to its fold and conventions or risk losing the individual altogether.
