This paper discusses how Hochschild shows how Leopold not only plundered the region and decimated the population, he also
showed amazing media savvy for his time and cultivated an image quite counter to what he was really doing to Africa and its
people. It is shown that Leopold was not the only European leader taking the resources of Africa from a people who did not have sufficient power to resist, but his rule over the Congo was especially rapacious and destructive.
