This paper examines to what extent the mainland Great British
political parties were in agreement over Irish political, religious
and economic problems in the
period 1798-1893. It explains how towards the end of the period, the two parties began to disagree more on Irish issues, as William Gladstone looked to "pacify Ireland" with his conciliatory approach.
