Hybrid Theory – The Battle For Woodstock Trilogy Pt 2

Website Review by: Derek Lynch

Hybrid Theory – The Battle For Woodstock Trilogy Pt 2This is the second of three articles on the Battle for Woodstock 2006
– Revenge of the Flying DecibelsAmplifiers were turned up all the way to 11 in true Spinal Tap fashion at the 1st Semi Final of this years Battle for Woodstock held at Roxy’s on August 26th 2006. Yet another great night of awesome bands, monster sound, moshy happy people, and a disturbing amount of alcohol.Despite being smaller than I remembered and having a crappy selection of beers (I ended up surprisingly mangled on that horrific sheep-dip Australians call Fosters) Roxy’s remains one of my favourite live music venues in Johannesburg for one reason and one reason only – the Hybrid Theory. You see (fellow conspiracy theorists), every time I watch a band play at Roxy’s they tend to raise their game way beyond expectations and I have a theory as to why that is: there is a whopping great metal wasp/helicopter hybrid hanging precariously above the stage at Roxy’s – just waiting to crush some poor skinny lead singer quite literally into the stage. I never thought about this much before until I saw a switch behind the upstairs bar ominously marked “wasp”…could it be that the bands are informed beforehand that if they suck, the switch gets flipped and the wasp thingy gets released to let gravity reap havoc? Hmm…Luckily, all 5 bands on the night were in fine form and the giant wasp remained in its place for the duration of the evening (maybe we can get Steve Hofmeyer to play Roxy’s…I want to see what carnage that thing can do!). Competition was stiffer than Bill Clinton with an intern and all five bands need to be congratulated for professionalism, passion and energy in abundance.Read further at http://www.5fm.co.za/blogJockeys/blogs.aspx?alias=Derek_Lynch&month=9&year=2006
