Just look for a cool
group of teenagers in a flashy consort, busy
smoking packets of cigarettes they will divulge there experiments with
Marijuana. But you phrase it a drug, they will be all set to come to
its resistance, calling it ‘just the done thing’.
Hash, marijuana, grass, weed …. They all are different names of
cannabis, legitimately termed as Soft Drug. Informally its users in the
age group of 15-35 would tell you, it is the safest drug,
actually less
harmful than Alcohol and smoking. Thanks to this myth, the usage of
cannabis in its various forms is increasing, especially in youngsters.
However, the contented notion of the protection of this soft
drug was
punctured freshly when the journal Lancet published an all-inclusive
study providing that cannabis usage increases the risk of schizophrenia
by 40 per cent, as compared to non-users. And not only are
long term
users at jeopardy, for even one
time usage ups the risk of getting the
incapacitating ailment. This study
takes away the ‘cool’, ‘hip’ and
‘nontoxic’ tags of cannabis and replaces them with ‘psychosis’,
‘delusions’ and ‘amotivation’.
A study says that cannabis usage
can root psychosomatic reliance, leads to chemical changes in the
user’s brain, can cause human errors like outbursts and accidents and
affects memory and intellect.
In the U.K one in five youngsters report using cannabis at least once in a week, some of them being heavy users. A fifth of Britain’s
youth, so to say, is today ‘on cannabis’. The British government has
been deliberating over reclassifying cannabis as a Category B drug. In
that category possession of cannabis will lead to a jail sentence. On
the other side of legal spectrum is the Netherlands,
where coffee shops are allowed to sell cannabis for personal use. The
Dutch drug policy is based on the general principle of
self-determination in matters of the body. In other words it is not
illegal to hurt yourself.
Experts say that a15 year old
smoking cannabis have no idea of the difference between B or C. It’s
already illegal for them anyway. What is needed is education about the
