India BSF and Bangla BRD trade fired on Satkhira border
SATKHIRA, Aug 25 (Zoland News Network): Members of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) exchanged fire in the early hours of Friday on the Satkhira border, several hours after a daylong
battalion level
flag meeting on the border situation.
No casualty was reported.
The BDR sources said that the BSF members from Pakirdanga camp near Khozadanga in the Indian territory opened fire without provocation. In retaliation, the BDR members also fired two rounds from near the main pillar of Gazipur BOP on Satkhira border.
Earlier Thursday, a flag meeting was held between the two forces at Khoja point of India where both the sides agreed to avoid any violence and maintain peace on the border.
Acting commander of Satkhira 41 Rifles Battalion Maj Humayun Kabir confirmed the incident.
A tense
situation continues for the third day yesterday on Paria border under Baliadangi upazila following raising red flags and massing huge troops with heavy weapons by BSF of India to set up a tea garden within 150 yards from the zero line.
Sources in Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and
frontier people said, BSF (Border Security Force) troops of Satvita Camp under 32 Battalion increased their strengths and engaged over 200 Indian workers in forcibly setting up a tea garden alongside with the zero line near pillar no 386/4S opposite to Paria outpost of BDR under Thakurgaon 20 Rifle Battalion on Wednesday morning.
Patrolling BDR of Paria outpost immediately lodged strong protests against the illegal and provocative move by BSF troops and asked BSF to stop such activities. Being obstructed, the BSF side apparently withdrew their workers from the border on the same day afternoon that apparently eased the situation.
But, the BSF side again took positions with heavy arms increasing their strengths from Thursday night. They again mobilised over 300 Indian workers and hoisted red flags on Thursday morning to set up the tea garden under BSF backings that created further tension on the border.
BDR authorities again lodged strong protests and proposed for a flag meeting between the two border guards immediately to avert further escalation of the situation and settle the issue through bilateral discussions as per border rules. But, BSF does not respond, rather it carries out provocative activities creating fear among the frontier villagers, the sources said.
BDR continues to show maximum restraints and is repeatedly proposing for a flag meeting. With a view to maintaining law and order and ensuring safety and security to the frontier people, BDR also raised red flags as BSF remained irresponsive regarding the BDR proposed flag meeting.
The latest reports reaching from the border said that BSF was maintaining their strengths pointing their arms towards Bangladesh triggering further tension on the border.
When contacted yesterday afternoon, senior BDR officials told that BDR was trying to resolve the issue through a flag meeting but BSF was not responding. BDR jawans have been put on alerted patrols and efforts were on to defuse the prevailing situation through a flag meeting, they added.
