From Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 July 2006 the International
Conference “MODEL-BASED
REASONING IN SCIENCE AND MEDICINE” will
be held at Sun Yat-Sen University in the city of Guangzhou (Canton). The
conference is one of the academic events involved in the Co-operation Agreement between Sun Yat-Sen University (P.R. CHINA) and the University of Pavia (ITALY), derives from a research cooperation between the Department of Philosophy of Sun Yat-Sen University and the Department of Philosophy of the University of Pavia, and continues the themes of the Conferences “Model-Based
Reasoning in Scientific Discovery” MBR98, “Model-Based Reasoning: Scientific Discovery, Technological Innovation, and Values” MBR01, and “Model-Based Reasoning in Science and Engineering: Abduction, Visualization, and Simulation” MBR04 (organized in EU), and of “the First International Conference of Philosophy and Cognitive Science: Science, Cognition, and Consciousness”, 2004 (already organized in China).
The conference will deal with the logical, epistemological, and cognitive aspects of modeling practices employed in science and medicine, including computational models of such practices, and focus on the role of abduction, visualization, and simulation in model-based reasoning from philosophical, historical, sociological, psychological, or computational perspectives. Scholars that will participate to the conference come from 14 countries: China, Italy, France, United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, Romania, Mexico, Brazil, India, Australia, etc.
The University of Pavia, one of the most ancient universities of the world, was founded in 1361 and is located in Pavia, already capital of the Longobard kingdom in the Middle Age. Pavia is near Milan, in northern Italy. Sun Yat-Sen University, originally known as Guangdong University, was founded in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a great democratic revolutionary in Chinese history, is located in Guangdong Province, the frontal of reform and opening, and has four campuses with a total area of 6.17 square kilometers sitting respectively on both sides of the Pearl River or facing the South China Sea.
