SIKKIM Plan to set-up
township near Nathula Pas
Less than a week after the resumption of trade with China through
Nathula in east Sikkim, the State Government has come up with a plan to set up a township near the border pass to boost commerce and
tourism.
At a recent
meeting with officials here, Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling asked the industries department to identify suitable sites for setting up a self-contained township that will have hotels and car parking facilities, official sources said here.
These sites will have to be somewhere near the trade mart at Sherathang and neighbouring Thegu, both within an eight-kilometre radius of the border outpost at Nathula.
Chamling also asked the tourism department to submit a proposal for building a 100-bed guest house at the Sherathang trade mart enroute to Nathula for travellers.
Improving the car park at Changu and the warehouse at the trade mart are also part of the State Government’s agenda for infrastructure upgradation on the way to Nathula, Chamling said at the meeting.
The meeting was attended by Tourism and Industries Minister RB Subba, PHE Minister Menlom Lepcha, chief secretary ND Chingapa and secretaries of the finance, power, tourism and rural development departments.
