Vengsarkar mum on Chappell''s allegation
JAIPUR, Mar 28:
Dilip Vengsarkar on Wednesday
kept mum on coach Greg Chappell''s allegation that the chief selector, fearing a media backlash, did not back the juniors while picking the World Cup squad.
Chappell, in an SMS to a journalist, had alleged that the senior Team India cricketers resisted the inclusion of younger players when the World Cup squad was being picked. Chappell alleged Vengsarkar too sided with the senior players, for he was afraid of a media backlash in case the juniors failed to perform.
Here to watch the final of the Ranji Trophy One-day tournament at the Sawai Mansingh stadium, Vengsarkar did not respond to the allegation.
He just smiled and said he had nothing to say.
Asked if the Indian team would see some new faces, the former captain evaded a direct answer and said, "Don''t try to get answers from me. I have a broad bat, I can block your questions."
He, however, was ready to talk about the Ranji match.
"I feel Mumbai have batted well. The match has progressed nicely. It will be interesting to see how Rajasthan chase the total," he said.
Admitting that the wicket was little slow, he said, "You should be prepared to bat on any wicket."
He also said that performance in matches like this would be counted.
"This is a premier tournament. We shall consider the performance here. That is why I am here," he said.
When asked whether players like Ramesh Powar or Pankaj Singh can get the nod, he said, "I can''t talk about individuals. Whoever performs, can get a call. But I''m happy that Rajasthan has reached the final after a long time. It augurs well for their cricket."
