Don''t tamper with Tait''s action: Roberts
MELBOURNE, March 28:
West Indies fast bowling
great Andy Roberts has asked Australia not to tamper with Shaun Tait’s ‘raw action’ and be careful with the pacer for the good of world cricket.
Roberts, who watched Tait in Australia’s clash against the West Indies at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, where he is curator, said: "He does have a raw action but I like it.
"No one should interfere with anyone’s natural action. Just let him be. If you do that with someone who is bowling fast, that will stop him from bowling fast."
Roberts said Australian captain Ricky Ponting should use Tait in short spells to withstand the strain
on his body.
"Ponting must learn how to use him properly. Let him bowl fast in short spells," he was quoted as saying in Australian media.
Robert said Tait should only be guided how to handle his fitness. "All he has to do is know the areas of his body which need strengthening and work on it."
Roberts, one world’s fastest bowlers in the late 1970s, has long lamented a lack of real quicks but feels Tait could terrorise the best batsmen with thunderbolts up to 160km/h.
"Cricket went downhill when they restricted fast bowling with the bouncer rule. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a fast bowler tearing in and a batsman trying to straight drive, or hook him out of the ground.
"Tait is one of those bowlers who can do that," he said.
Robert also singled out veteran Aussie Glenn McGrath for praise. "He and Curtly Ambrose are the two best bowlers the world has seen at putting the ball in the same spot. He’s a great bowler and one of the greatest of all time," he said.
