Sept. 11 2001 was the day
that can be called tumultous in the history of US when
the
Hijacked jetliners
hit the World Trade Center in New
York
and the Pentagon outside Washington. One hijacked plane
crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Trading on Wall
Street stopped. The Federal Aviation Administration
halted
all flight operations at the nation's airports.
President
Bush vowed to find those responsible and bring them to
justice. World Trade Towe collapsed. The international
leaders condemned the outrageous attacks.
Consequence to this, Moussaoui was arrested in
Minnesota a
month before 9/11 after arousing suspicions when
learning
how to fly a Boeing 747. Prosecutors have argued that
by
failing to warn FBI agents of the plot he was
responsible
for the murder of 2,973 people.
ZACARIAS MOUSSAOUI, the only al-Qaeda plotter ever to
face
trial for the attacks on the US, is facing the death
penalty. The jury is convinced that his lies to FBI
agents
had resulted in people being killed on 9/11. This is a
unanimous verdict of the Jury owing to that Moussaoui
is
eligible for execution. The trial in Alexandria,
Virginia,
is deciding whether he should die by lethal injection
or be
imprisoned for life.
The legal experts say that the
prosecution, which
plans to
call as witnesses about 40 relatives of 9/11 victims,
would
be able to prove that his crimes were sufficiently
abominable to justify the death sentence.
Initially Moussaoui, 37, a Frenchman of Moroccan
descent,
had said that he was in flight school for fun and was
visiting the US as a tourist and denied having any
knowledge of the plot.
But, later on he admitted being part of al-Qaeda. The
prosecution case rested on the testimony of aviation
officials that they could have prevented the hijackings
if
they had known of the plot earlier.
Now Moussaoui has confessed to everything of which the
prosecution had accused him. Further to this he has
confirmed his co-conspirator in the hijacking plan was
Richard Reid, the British “shoe bomber” sentenced to
life
imprisonment after trying to blow up a transatlantic
jet in
December 2001. Moussaoui had also claimed he knew the
World
Trade Center was a target and that he would have
piloted a
fifth jetliner into the White House.
