HAND OF
PREFERENCE & CEREBRAL ASYMMETRY
There is an inextricable link between the hand individuals use for
writing (handedness) and cerebral asymmetric motor behavior (refers to the idea of a given physical function is controlled preferentially by one side of the brain.
In this way, individuals'' favoritism for either left or right hand is a
significant marker for brain
hemispheric dominance (whether left or
right brain). One may assume, therefore, that the left brain controls
right hand movement and vice versa. Hence, asymmetries in the brain
maps "handedness". Thus, a person''s hand of preference is normally
accepted to be opposite from his/hers specialized hemisphere (e.g.
a right handed person probably have a left hemispheric mathematical
specialization and a left handed person a right brain hemispheric
specialization for music and artistic abilities. We can conclude, therefore, that distinct behavioral and cognitive skills will be found for right- and left-handers.
