This paper discusses managed care, which is a system where health insurers closely monitor
patients'
treatments and restrict
their insurance benefits to cover only services that the insurer judges to be "medically necessary." This system has had an important effect on the care of suicidal
patients. This paper looks at these effects and evaluates their effectiveness.
