How to Become a Translator?

Personal Experience Review   by:Lucas5

First of all, translation is written, Interpreter is the spoken language.
You can hear a lot of people saying “if you speak another language, become a translator!”. It is true, you have to speak at least two languages to become a translator, but that is not all, you have to be familiar with the culture of the languages you speak, you have to know their slangs and idiomatic expression, you have to know what is happen on that country now, and so on.
It is good you you have a field, it is a subject of that you must be very good in. must translator have academic formation in another area before they start to translate, it is not necessary, but is a plus.
Nowadays, you need, I mean, you really need to have a solid knowledge of computers and internet, it is not just type, but you have to know the formats of the files, you have to understand the why files are transmitted and is a good to you if you know HTML language, and HTML is just the basic, the translation work now is through the internet, and must of the jobs we get, is to translate websites, HTML is the basic you need to know, there are PHP, FLASH, JAVA and so on.
Another reason to be good on PCs is that the most jobs of translations you get today is to be done on a TM software, (Translation Memory) is a software that helps the translator to translate the texts faster and easier, there are a lot of TMs on the net now, The most famous is the TRADUS, it is the standard for translation agencies, but not all the translator like to use it, not just because you need to pay to have it(and it is expensive), but because it is hard to work with. But there are a lot of alternatives to it, the most famous is the Wordfast(I think it is the better), but there are a lot of other that you can get by free on the internet.
If you are serious in become a translator, you can start by doing your registration on several translation directories that have on the internet, some of then you have to pay for it, but I suggest to you to start whit the free ones.
And to finish, remember of always study, never give up and be in contact with the languages you work with, remember that your work will call more work, and so, you have to be sure the job is well done before you sent it.
All the best, if that is the career you choose, good look and go on.
