how to get into the acting business.
There are simple steps you can follow to make a career out of acting. Remember that not all of these tips work for everyone. All people are unique, especially actors. 1. Start Small
Yes, it's easier said than done, but you've got to get a foot start somewhere in the business. Depending on how old you are, and how much experience you have, acting in school or community theater is a great start. It also will look good on a resume. Find community projects, and audition! Never let the fear of being turned away stop you from doing what you love.
2. Get an Agent
If theater isn't your thing, and you're more into the tech side of show business, than finding an agent is one of the best choices you can make. There's many ways of going about this. First of which, is applying for a talent agency. Talent agencies are generally publicly funded businesses that hire talent to display on their website. Besides casting calls, this is how directors and talent scouts find actors for their projects. They consult talent agencies, and browse through their possible actors, and then find the one they want. Talent agencies can be a great start to getting into the acting business.
3. Audition!
This works for both the theater and film industry. Many television shows and films will have open auditions or casting calls, in which you can sign up, audition, and maybe get a call back. Do some research, and try to find auditions in your area. Even if it's something as small as a community play, musical, or even a low budget film, take it! It makes for great experience, will look great on a resume, and can even get you up where you want to be. And that leads us to our next tip.
4. Make Connections
Connecting and collaborating with other people within the film industry is one of the most critical ways of going about starting your career. Say you have a friend who knows someone who does crew and backstage on a set. You get to talking, and get a job working backstage. There, you're one step closer, and instantly surrounded by other actors and directors. This could land you a possible audition, and if you become close friends with people who work in film, you have even a better chance.
5. Practice
Practice makes perfect, and in this case, it's definitely true. Just go out there, and experiment. Get to know what works for you, and what doesn't. Take part in plays, musicals, theater, performance groups; Even little things like a traveling circus can prepare you for an acting career later in life.
Hope this has helped you get a little bit of a head start in how to build a career in the performing industry. Remember to follow all these tips, and just do your research! Find what works and doesn't, never be afraid to get out there and be you!
