We all use prescribed drugs for treatment of our ailments. But along with cure, invariably there are adverse reactions and side effects. The treatment must not be worse than the cure and quality of life should improve during and after treatment. There are problems of quacks, spurious drugs, large number of prescribed drugs, drugs being prescribed even when not needed, drugs being freely available across the counter, inadequately educated chemists, illegible prescriptions of doctors, and unproven claims of improvements from some drugs and reports of medicines of expiry dates being recirculated in the market. Antibiotics in use for various types of infections cause side effects like killing all good and bad bacteria in our body, cause constipation, diarrohoea, stomach upset or some other reaction. In an instance of taking Antibiotics, severe skin allergy reaction was observed, which took another set of medicines, some time and money to set right. This was in spite of taking Vitamin B 12 along with it daily. Once another prescribed medicine was taken and right from first tablet, giddiness was observed and on checking BP, it was found to be very high. When medicine was stopped, the BP got normalized soon. A child is reported to have gone into coma due to use of higher potency injection being administered, due to illegible or unclear prescription of the Doctor. The elderly are said to consume about 25 % of the drugs for their ailments. It is necessary to avoid some more ailments being caused, due to taking medicines. The intake of drugs when not required is also expected to cause health and economic problems. It is better to avoid or reduce drugs, to the extent and where possible.
