Three days of happiness

Book Summary by: creativeforce

Original Author: Mr.Venkateshan
this took place a few years back. i had gone to the central bank of india branch, in mandvi area of baroda. after
finishing my work, i was coming out, when from the corner of my eye, i noticed some movement on the window sill. upon closer observation, i found a tiny baby squirrel, huddled up, looking scared! being an animal lover, stopped to look around to check if its mother was around. the bank security guard joined me in a brief search outside the premises too. we cudnt find mama squirrel anywhere. so i took the poor creature, and gently slid it into my pocket. it remained there, its eyes closed, i also noticed that it trembled for a while, and then after a few minutes the trembling stopped. was it because of the body warmth? god knows....
i came home on my bike, with this new guest of ours, in my pocket, safe and secure. the first thing i did was call my friend roopa, an animal activist, animal lover, and as far as i was concerned, an authority on pet animals, and also my ex office coleague. she came home for 10 mins, had a look, and enlightened me that it was a male squirrel, and it needs to be fed. so we took a cotton swab, dipped it in milk and tried to feed "tiny"! yes roopa also completed the baptism formalities in those 10 mins. initially tiny refused to have milk, very stubborn, and not opening its mouth. i asked aarti to try her way, maybe some maternal touch could help. but tiny didnt relent. finally after lots of effort, he licked the milk on the outside of his mouth, and seemed to like it. feeding became easier, he must have had a few drops.
i was happy. i decided i was going to keep ''tiny''. rohan was very excited when he came back from school. by evening, he had brought 3 of his friends to see his new pet. a few more neighbours visited us, and shared our excitement and joy. i had to select a home for tiny. a vegetable basket, with a top cover, was selected, a napkin was placed, and tiny got his first home, without any painful EMIs! i was surprised to see that tiny took just 24 hrs to get friendly with me. it used to give a chirping sound when it saw me, and readily rested on my palms, and was more happy to sit in my shirt pocket. i used to keep him there for some time before transferring him to his cage. at night, the cage remained next to our beds.
the way he sucked milk off the cotton swab was fun to watch. me and rohan used to fight over who will carry tiny on his shoulders, while going out, after he grows up to become an adult squirrel. aarti also retold rohan the story about how the squirrel got those parallel lines on its back. suddenly we found rohan taking a lot of interest in the other stories of ramayana too. tiny had brought some tiny,  yet happy changes in our lives.......
on the fourth day, i came back from office, to see rohan very sad and angry at the same time. tiny was gone. a cat that was a regular visitor, had knocked down the cage, the top must have come off, and tiny was gone. rohan talked of killing the cat, we told him this was nature. however my explanation was not so convincing as even  i felt extremely sad and upset at losing tiny this way. whenever i see a squirrel, even today, i remember tiny. that day at the bank, if i had not picked up the baby squirrel, maybe tiny could have been alive today!
