optimystic writes:Queen Latifah's newest
film, "Last
Holiday", is a wee bit corney, but absolutely delightful and uplifting.
Georgia Byrd, a shy and quiet store clerk with many hidden talents, is pushed into living life to its fullest when she learns she has only three weeks to live. Instead of despairing, Byrd delves into her "Book of Possibilities" to decide which of her
dreams she can satisfy in the short space of
time she has left. She cashes in her savings and retirement, and rushes headlong into her
great adventure, without worrying (for once) what anyone thinks.
As a sales associate in the local department store, Byrd sells cookware and her in-store demonstrations are more like master lessons in the culinary arts. At the beginning of Georgia's very bad day, her boss criticizes her for pleasing the customers, whom he characterizes as mooches. Georgia is visibly upset, and when the man of her dreams comes by to check on her, a bump on the head puts everything in a
new light.
The net result is that finally Georgia is doing something for Georgia - but with all her humanity and values intact. She calls them as she sees them, and we are lucky to join her on her journey.
There are also great performances from Gérard Depardieu, LL Cool J, and Timothy Hutton.
You will laugh out loud, you will cry, and you will leave happy. A film worth your time - I strongly recommend "Last Holiday", a new comedy from Paramount Pictures, for all audiences.
