THE HOURS

Book Summary by: Towers

Original Author: Stephen Daldry (Director)
The film is based on three main stories set in different eras, linked by common yearnings and fears. Virginia Woolf
lives in a London suburb in the 1920's, Laura Brown is a wife and mother in post-World War II Los Angeles and Clarissa Vaughan lives in New York City. One writes the book Mrs Dalloway, the second is moved by the events of the book in Mrs Dalloway and the third is a modern day Mrs Dalloway.
It's a fantastic film with not a single bad performance. Nicole Kidman is sensation as Virginia Woolf. Julianne Moore is a believable Laura Brown and Meryl Streep is a great Clarissa Vaughan. The dialogue in the film is great and captures the different eras perfectly. Some of the great lines in the film include, You can't find peace by avoiding life.
The supporting cast are all sensational too and bring this great piece of film to life.

Stephen Daldry directs this picture perfectly, giving us a real feeling of the pain that these characters suffered, against picturesque scenes and great cinematic presence.
All the awards that were given to this film were justified. Sometimes when you put a whole bunch of successful actors together the results can be disappointing, but not in this case. It feels like the whole cast of actors are going through some kind of growth arc. They suffer problems and then try to resolve them, sometimes with devastating outcomes. This is not the happy ever after film of Hollywood, but a artistic and great picture of struggle. Nicole Kidman portrays a great Virginia Woolf, as she wonders in and out of her mind, working out the plot for the book MRS DALLOWAY. The woman appears to be paranoid about things. At the same time we see the effect of the words that she is writing has on the other characters.
