On at least every cable network and dish system one can tune into one
channel devoted to sincere human beings whose sole aim is to save us. They preach from lush grand pulpits complete with choirs and large
television audiences. I can recall when only one or two were aired and then only on Sunday morning. Who could forget those talks by Bishop Fulton Sheen? They were given in clear simple language. And Reverend Schuller from the crystal catherdal did inspire millions.
For those shut in these programs are a life saver. For these people finding it easier than going to church, it becomes an excuse. Granted the souls are saved. There is no argument there. And if it works, why even make noise about the abundance of
good thinking men of the cloth? Perhaps it troubles this writer that we find it necessary as a society to need so many of the televised
preachers when so many
churches are closing down.
Are we in such a hurry scurry world with so heavy a reliance on the small screen we can not get off our duffs to attend
church for an hour on Sunday? When did the television replace the pulpit? Where did the church leaders go awry in keeping the flocks attending?
Since 911 occured people have flocked more and more to God. That probably was the only good thing coming out of the tragedy. We were already patriotic. We did not need countless lives to be lost to prove that. It was more the way our own immortality was pointed out to us so abruptly getting our attention.
Will the churches ever be replaced by Channel 10 for God? I doubt it. Will there be more new channels with even more preachers? The odds are good the answer is yes.
Maybe if God sees it as okay, maybe it is.
