It is about time people in this country realize some facts of life. Guns do not kill people. It is the
Person holding said weapon causing injury or death. A car driven by a drunk driver is not at fault for the accident. The man or woman behind the wheel is. So why must everyone cast blame on other external forces?
Parents who so blind to what their sons and daughters are doing are left dumbstruck at news of the " child who would not hurt a fly" bringing a
Gun to school. They are even more appalled at the idea their precious darling was operating a two thousand pound car under the influence. They know better. They would not drink alcohol or take drugs never mind drive afterwards.
The Columbine
school incident happened. Young
lives were lost. Bodies were injured. The two bringing on the havoc committed suicide. The guns they carried into school were purchased at gun shows and private avenues. The world looked at the lads and said what a tragedy. How could it have been prevented?
We
need to stop blaming video games depicting violence and movies where action heroes carry bigger and better weapons to get the point across. We need, as parents, to say NO and Enough is Enough. Spend time with a child and one will see how they think and feel. A Fifth grader brings a gun to school and shoots his teacher and a couple classmates. The motive: he got a bad grade from the instructor. It has nothing to do with video games or televison.
A handgun will only go off if someone pulls the trigger. That person will only use the firearm if he or she has access to it. He or she will only have access to it if the person responsible for the gun does NOT take proper precautions. People will only die if all of the above are not seen to correctly.
It is time all adults accept some form of accountability for our youth today. We were once young ourselves, remember? Teaching by example means spending quality time with our children before they reach the out of
control phase. Self-Gun-Control can and will save lives. Talking to sons and daughters can and will save lives
lost in automobile accidents. It all starts at home.
