In the Western State of Gujarat in India,
prohibition is in force since 1947. Anybody consuming alcoholic beverages without
legal permit is punished and imprisoned for at least one week and fine. But the violators of this Law are many. The number is so large that Courts of Law cannot hold trials in time and majority of lawbreakers roam free to break the Law again and again. The penal system is not
effective and when the accused is actually brought to justice in Court, many years have passed. The Law seems to have become ineffective. To make Law effective, Government of Gujarat has introduced a new system of punishment for violation of
Prohibition Law. The accused will be sent for works of public utility such as,·
--Sweeping Roads and Cleaning public places and buildings
· --Working for Elders in Infirmaries·
--Paving tiles on foot paths and making new roads
·-- Cleaning of public toilets· Planting trees
· --Gardening
After successful completion of this public service, the local head sends report to the Police and if found unsatisfactory, he will have to remain prepared for trial in Court of Law.
