Age of wisdoms:
The most exhaustive sources of the Hindu mythology are the Puranas (lit. ancient in Sanskrit). Due
to their strong sectarian biases, Puranas often retell same myths in different versions. Although there are innumerable Puranas, eighteen are considered great, or Maha Puranas. These are traditionally subdivided into three groups. Raja Brahma, Sattvic Puranas eulogise Vishnu and the Tamasic Puranas praise Shiva and Shakthi. The eighteen Puranas are:
Agni: Deals with arts like poetry, drama and figures of speech; astronomy and architecture.
Bhagvata: Incarnations of Vishnu, emphasis on Krishna.
Bhavishya: Details of events of future
Brahma: Explains link between Shiva and Surya
Brahmanda: Origin of Universe
Brahmavaivarta: Creation of Universe, nature Ganesha, and Krishna and Radha
Garuda: Astronomy medicine and grammer. Has a detailed analysis of diamonds.
Kurma: Details Vishnu incarnation as a tortoise and Geography
Linga: Details twenty-eight forms of Shiva
Markandeya: Ancient Vedic tales of Agni, Surya and Indra
Mastya: Expounds on Jainism, Buddhism, Natyashastra and kings of Andra
Naradeya: Treatise of Narada’s teachings
Padma: Details of months and retells most of the myths
Shiva: details of 28 forms of Shiva
Skanda: Details of killing of demon Tarakdsura by Skanda
Vamana: Details of Vishnu incarnations after Vamana avatar
Varaha: Has details of pilgrimage spots and mantras
Vishnu: Details of 10 incarnations of Vishnu
