Concentration camp
History is an interesting subject to those students who study today, but it brings bad memories to those who were part of the struggle or conflict. I watched on television, old
people crying, remembering those who perished in
Concentration camps, during the Second World War in Germany. All world leaders stressed one point, never again, but were they referring only to the Jewish nation or to all nations here on earth?
The world war was even better because some of the people, who
managed to escape Germany, were offered refugee status in neighboring countries, not taking away the pain, which others experienced. I worked up very early one day going to work, traveling from the west of Johannesburg to the east, I didn’t know what was
waiting for me that day. Just fifty meters from my house I came across a roadblock, with the police and soldiers waiting, they were searching for Identity documents and unfortunately I had forgotten mine at home. I was arrested, and taken to the police station, on
arrival, I was denied an opportunity to call home instead they took me to the
notorious concentration camp called Lindela (meaning waiting for deportation). On arrival I discovered that, concentration camps still exist and no one is saying a word about them. The so-called illegal immigrants from neighboring Zimbabwe and Mozambique are kept in this, inhuman place, which even
food is not fit for human consumption. I was arrested in winter and it was very cold to all those who know South African climate, but I had to spent three nights sleeping on the floor without blankets, even the food there, is not health. They are thousands of people who died in this camp or soon after their release, imagine a room of 50 x15 square meters packed with five hundred people or more, some of them sick with contagious diseases, which they easily spread to those who are well. The Jews suffered and so many people realized later that they could have done something in time to help them. Zimbabweans are not enjoying being in South Africa, but they are forced by the situation in their country, they are running away from hunger, poverty and political crisis only to be jailed and placed in this notorious concentration camp in South Africa, with the whole world watching. I was released after three days only to find that, I had lost ten kilograms of weight, and very sick. I managed to recover at the hospital two weeks, but I still feeling the pain even today. So imagine what happens to those Zimbabweans and Mozambicans, who spend close almost a month detained in this camp, will they survive after deportation, or they will die on arrival to their respective countries. One wonder whether the African Union or other world bodies will managed to tackle, this crisis , and help these poor Africans suffering, Or will they wait for millions to die first.
