The Indo-American relationship from Henry Truman to Eisenhower and John. F. Kennedy , Richard Nixon to Bush Senior , at the
time of America’s different presidents' tenure of working, due to cold war and polarization of international politics and similar reasons were unfavorable and nonfriendly.
India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru ,Yugoslavia’s
president Tito and Jamaal Abdul Nasser of Egypt joined hands to start nonaligned movement and the movement was further strengthened during the conference held at Bendang,Indonesia . But the western
countries specially America has always seen this movement with suspicion .Nehru being a matured leader of rising Asia has indicated that while keeping apart from the opposing groups established by America and U.S.S.R, it is possible to establish a group of developing nations of Asia and Africa .
Even today America reckons those countries as their opponents who do not support them in their international affairs. While starting the war against terrorism America’s President George.W.Bush had mentioned the same that ‘Either you are with us or you are in our oppositions’. And America knew it from the beginning that the best way to teach a lesson to India who do not dance to their tunes is to arm Pakistan heavily against India .Along with Kashmir issue the efforts by American administration to please Pakistan has increased the crack in the relationship between Delhi and Washington for years, although leaders of both the countries have been meeting from time to time to maintain the formalities of friendship. And then came 1991,when the cold war was dampening .On one side during Mr. Gorvachov’s tenure, U.S.S.R was restructuring and on the other side in India P.V Narasimha Rao and Dr Manmohan Singh were widening the path of financial growth in India. After 1991 a wind of change started blowing over the subcontinent and even America felt that it should not remain passive to the wind of change blowing over this subcontinent. Very soon, the cold war became the past and America was established as the only superpower politically, financially and militarily. With time it was evident that the two Asian countries India and China is also moving very fast to become superpower. In 2000 A.D before taking oath for the office of president, George.W.Bush even did not know who was the Prime Minister of India and President of Pakistan. But today he has more information about the Indian Prime Minister than the earlier President Bill Clinton who felt that with the rapid change of the conditions and situations ,it is not relevant and justified to treat India and Pakistan at par and to consider them equally. During 2000 A.D ,before few days of taking oath as America’s new President Mr George.W.Bush even didn’t know if any earlier President had tried to win over India. He had knowledge of India’s strength and weaknesses. He respected both the upcoming superpowers i.e. India and China. But what is the truth? Is India coming nearer to America or is America coming nearer to India? Or are both of them coming nearer to each other? Reality is this. It is beneficial for both of the countries to come nearer to each other. One of them is the world’s biggest democracy and the other is the biggest power. One of India’s most popular news channel ‘Newsweek’ ‘s editor has confessed in his interview that the necessity of India’s financial prosperity for establishment of counterbalance has compelled Mr George.W.Bush to come near to India. But there are many such facts which have influenced the thoughts of America. And one of the reasons is the importance of India’s spearheading workforce. Mr Bush has himself agreed that there are many such American nationals of Indian origin who has made invaluable contributions in the development of America. Today the high-tech industries for which the face of our society has totally changed, is accredited s to the Americans with Indian origin and the Indians who have been educated in America. The American citizen has started looking to the enormous contributions of the Indians for their country from a different angle. And now they have started realizing that these Indians have not only contributed to the development of America but also for the whole world. Never before the relation between India and America were so bright and it is beneficial for both of them to come near to each other.
We do not support the political ambitions of America but in the field of finance and industry there is no hesitation to be their partner and for that purpose to be nearer to them. It is clear from the fact that America’s intentions to come nearer to India are for the reason since in the 21st century India is going to be a superpower.
