Objective To study the killing effects of ethanol extracts of herbal medicine to mosquito larva, and to seek for safe insecticide. Methods The virtual ingredients of 28 species of herbs were extracted by ethanol. Late stage Ⅲ and early stage Ⅳ mosquito larvae were treated with 2%(2g herb/100ml solvent) herbal extracts for 24 hours. Results 13 herbal extracts could cause at least 50% mortality of Aedes albopicutus larvae and 17 herbal extracts could cause 50% mortality of Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus. 12 herbal extracts could cause at least 50% mortality of the larvae of both species. 3 herbal extracts could cause 100% mortality of Aedes albopicutus larvae while 8 herbal extracts could cause 100%mortality of Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus. Those herbs caused 100% mortality of both kinds of larvae were Veratrum nigrum, Echinops latifolius Tausch and Cnidium monnier. Conclusion 28 species of herbs have different killing effects to mosquito larvae. Some herbs such as Veratrum nigrum, Echinops latifolius Tausch and Cnidium monnier that can kill both Aedes albopicutus and Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus may have a potential to develop as insecticides.
