When classifying the Chinese subjects, many scholars point out that there are time subject and place subject in Chinese,
that is to say, the adverbials at the beginning of the sentence are regarded as subjects. Accordingly, there is another kind of subject-manner subject in Chinese. The author of the paper insists that it is only a division of sentence elements from the surface structure if we regard time words, place words and manner words as subject, but not analyze the sentence from the view of pragmatics and semantics. If we analyze the
sentences from the deep structure, we will find that there is a hidden subject between an adverbial and a predicate and the time words, place words and manner words are still adverbials. If the same sentences are expressed in English, the subjects are absolutely necessary so as to show the explicit feature of English. The relationships among the Chinese sentence elements are not expressed by forms and morphology, but to show them by semantics itself. The subjects may be implied in the Chinese sentences and we can get to know the Chinese subjects from semantics.
