With the economy declining each day, a lot of individuals are eager to find quality items that can be used in their home
for a fraction of the retail store prices. With that in mind anyone is able to have a successful garage sale if the items are in good condition and at a fair price.
The first step is finding items for you to sell. I suggest
cleaning every room in your home to determine what items are for sale and what item you want to keep. The items should be in good condition, such items as furniture,
clothing, kitchen appliances, electronics, books, shelves, decorations, paintings, children’s toys, bathroom rugs and décor, kitchen utensils, DVD movies, bedroom lamps, couch covers, blankets, cell phones, purses, wallets, flower vases, exercise equipment, throw pillows and area rugs are among the best sellers at a garage sale.
Second, start pricing your items. You can start by pricing the smaller items first such as; purses, wallets and throw pillows. Prices should range from 0.50cents to $2.00.
When pricing the larger items the prices should not exceed more that 25% of the retail price. Although many items may be in great condition, you should keep in mind that you are holding a “garage sale” and the object of this sale is to get rid if old items and make money while doing so.
Third, find a location for your garage sale and set a time and date. The location can be in your front yard. That way it would make things easier for you to set up and if a customer comes along and asks for a specific item, you can easily access it if it is indoors.
It is important that you start at a time that you feel comfortable with. You don’t want the garage sale to last all day nor start early in the morning. A lot of people sleep in on weekends. Therefore, a good time would be to set it between 10:00am and 5:00pm. Most people work Monday to Friday and have their day off on weekends. By setting the garage sale on a Saturday, it would increase the chances of visitors to your sale. Another thing that you should take into consideration is payday. Try and set your garage sale n a weekend that people is most likely to receive their payday.
To advertise your garage sale is the fith step. There are several ways to do so, you can start by informing your friends and family, pay for an announcement on your local radio station or use your computer to create flyers that can be distributed around the neighborhoods. The flyers should provide well written details of the event, date, time and location. Use multiple colors, add pictures and list your items. By doing so potential customers can know what exactly is for sale and decide if they want to purchase any of the items. The more you advertise the more successful your garage may turn out.
The final step is to arrange your items for sale. You should place the smaller items on a table or in a basket. The clothing should be hung up using hangers and a clothing rack. This is important because you want your potential customers to view all your items. With your items placed accordingly it will not be easily scattered when place back. Place the furniture along with side table and lamp. That will give your potential customers an idea of how they can use the setup in their home.
