Ads and Commercials

Book Summary by: Hermalina

Original Author: Hermalina
If making more money is all you need, consider this.
It's hard for people in prosperous
nations to realize it, but money can't buy happiness. A sad reality is that consuming defines our lives. Many people believe that they are immune to advertising without realizing the nasty side effects, the worst of which is convincing us of needs we don't have. In many cases, this means appealing to our worst side: vanity, greed, lust. It means exaggerating and misrepresenting, being deceptive and dishonest.
The ads tell us that spending money is actually saving money, that we can't afford to miss this purchase. The ads lie to us that we deserve to be pampered and spoiled, that we earned the right to treat ourselves royally. They (ads) lie that buying things will boost our satisfaction, relieve our depression, grow our circle of friends, solve our family problems. Life experience, on the other hand, proves that buyng things usually just gets us more things, which need to be taken care of, more things that break.
Sometimes advertisers try to make us laugh or make us think, but mostly they make us feel deprived or anxious. This sense of deprivation and anxiety drives us to keep buying. The ads make us believe that happiness is just one purchase away.
Children are especially vulnerable and an easy target to promises of instant gratification.
Clearly, if we truly want to be rich, the most important thing to do is to reject these lies which are being forced on us nowadays. Before spending, consider whether you are doing so out of a genuine need, or out of an artificial urge that some marketer has thrown at us. This may require being brutally honest with yourself.
