Specialized terms may be part of jargon, although the opposite is not always true. Jargon is the language of specialized
vocabulary used among professionals in a certain occupation or a given discipline. It consists mainly of terms unfamiliar to the general public, abstract words, non-existent words, acronyms and abbreviations. It may also include words and phrases that are met in general language, but have different connotations in a certain occupation or field. The formation of jargon vocabulary does not follow any systematic
classification, so new words and phrases appear and are established in great frequency, usually replacing older vocabulary. Furthermore, jargon is not restricted to use by
specialists but may be understandable by everyone who has some familiarity with the field that it appears. Jargon is considered informal, so it is basically used in the spoken language and it is unlikely to find jargon vocabulary among dictionary entries.
Specialized terms are met in specialized discourse. They evolve due to the need of experts in a field to communicate with precision and brevity. They are particular words or combinations of words that mean something very specific in a specialized area of knowledge. Specialized terms exist in a continuum of formality. They are formally recognized, documented, and taught by educators in the field. They may appear in official written texts, or can be used in formal oral communication among specialists. Such terms can be found in specialized dictionaries and glossaries of certain fields.
