YOUTH OF THE MILLENIA – ANGRY,
AGGRESSIVE AND
IMBALANCED It does soothe the ego to think that all is well, we are all
fine and nearly perfect… But I wish it were true.
Good morning to all present. We have been entrusted the tough task of proving that the youth of the millennia is angry,
aggressive and
imbalanced. Now, before you all jump up and say well so do you possess the qualities you are trying to thrust up on us, let me clarify. This statement is NOT applicable to every person under the sun within the age group of 16-35. No. All I’ll try to prove is that as compared to the previous generations, the Gen Y is relatively more aggressive and imbalanced. Huh!
Now, quite recently Delhi was rocked with reports of the waiters of Oasis restaurant beating up their ‘guests’ for demanding one more song or the MAMC rape by a boy our age or the murder of Vasant Vihar businessman over a dispute on parking space or the rape of a Mumbai girl by a police constable or Salman Khan taking out his masochism on Aishwarya Rai… The list just goes on, doesn’t it? All right I wont go to specific cases.
In a Road Rage study, which was conducted by international market research company Synovate, they found out that in India the statistics showed that 14 percent of motorists experienced physical assault, including the use of weapons. I mean take your own personal experiences. So many times the womenfolk have been subjected to lewd remarks, and molestation, and almost no conversation is conducted without an abuse or swear word. So many times we have seen a brawl on the road, drunken driving be it the rich or the poor. This transcends all boundaries.
According to the Press Trust Of India more than 80 people out of every lakh of the city’s denizens are behind bars, by far the highest among states and Union territories with large populations.
And oh! Yes imbalanced! Gurmeet Chopra was recently caught at Olive Bar selling 15 gms of cocaine to a young couple, Provogue’s MD was behind bars for drug possession.
The youth in particular constitutes the major chunk of drug consumers.
And the suicide rates are alarming! Frontline came up with this astounding bit of news: The rate of suicides in India, about 5 per lakh in the late 1960s, has more than doubled since then. The gravity of the problem is highlighted by the fact that nearly three-fourths of all suicides in India are by people in the socially and economically productive age group of 15 to 49.
What does all this data show? It clearly points to the fact that, lets admit it; we do have our priorities all mixed up. We are doing things that were actually unimaginable earlier, right?
As a debater, by job is over. I have proved using unquestionable statistics and real life examples that today’s youth, WE are more aggressive and imbalanced. But as we belong to the ‘youth’ bracket, we also need to know the reasons behind such a dismal picture. One thing is for sure. The youth has always been characterized by energy. It seems that due to unemployment, frustration at the governance, lack of proper guidance, dearth of role models, peer pressure and other such reasons we have not channelized it in the proper direction. Youth has the power of an atomic bomb. If we don’t give it a suitable outlet, we get a scene like the one we have right now. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose once said “Self – conscious youth will not only act, but will also dream; will not only destroy, but will also build.” Now is the time for a spiritual introspection.
